Why Should You Create Your Own Publication on Medium?

Whether it is your goal to be the sole author or to have many contributing authors, you have the ability to decide the direction your content will be taking through the intention behind your publication on Medium.

If you are passionate about creating content that falls within certain topics, or themes, you get to brainstorm your online magazine passion project and ultimately create your own publication to make money on Medium.

In addition to being able to artistically manage the look and feel of your online publication, you are also able to email followers of your publication to alert them to new stories.

You are able to break the fourth wall to connect with your audience and walk them through your virtual written wonderland each time you add new pieces.

How to create your publication on Medium

Step 1: Register

You need to be registered with an account on Medium.

Click onto your icon and scroll down the option on the menu until you see: Publications.

Click on it.

You will then be taken to a new page where you will see publications that you have been accepted to write for, as well as the publications that you are following.

Step 2: Click on New Publication

Next to the heading: Publications, there is an option for you to click on.

It reads New Publication. Click on it.

Step 3: Fill out the fields

From here you will be taken to a new page where you can add the name of your new publication. It will form part of the URL medium.com/the-name-of-your-publication

You can then enter a tagline for your publication along with a description of what your publication will cover.

It is always a good idea to check out the descriptions of other Medium publications to draw inspiration, not copy, from what has drawn you to other publications. Find your own voice on the platform and have your description of your publication be what encourages others to follow you.

You will then be directed to add an avatar for your publication. You can create a custom PNG, JPG, or GIF in Canva with the dimensions 1000 x 1000 px.

From here, the fun continues as you can create a publication logo (400 x 400 px) and publication cover image too. Again, I recommend using Canva.

From here, you will be able to add your social media information. There is space for you to add links to:

  • Your email address

  • Your Twitter profile

  • Your Instagram profile

  • Your Facebook profile

A tip is to create a brand behind your publication. If your publication is to promote your own work, then including your personal profiles is a good idea. However, if you have created a publication that you feel would better suit new social profiles, create them, and then add them.

Next, you will have space to add five stages that best represent your publication.

Examples of tags include:

  • Relationships

  • Personal Growth

  • Entrepreneurship

  • Marketing

  • Startup

  • Life Lessons

Again, look at what other publications have used. Then, draw inspiration to identify which tags would best suit your publication.

Finally, the last field you will be required to fill out is who the editor/ editors of the publication are.

You will also be able to add writers to your publication here.

Medium is constantly improving and changes are bound to happen. However, it seems that having your own publication and gaining a following is always a good idea to distribute your work to people who follow you.
